Wii Remote – Greatest Gaming Invention Ever?

Ever since being announced at the Tokyo Game show in 2005, the Wii remote, or “wiimote,” has caused a tremendous buzz throughout the gaming world. For the first time a mass distributed controller would allow gamers to act out and have the actions represented by their avatars. This was a complete and total revolution in the game console and controller market, and is something that other game manufactures still have not caught up too. The Wii remote is what makes an otherwise inferior gaming console superior to it’s larger and more powerful competition. The graphics and networkability of Microsoft’s XBOX 360 put it technologically way past the Wii, but the Wii remote makes the smaller system much more fun.

Nintendo Does it Again

With the Wii and its attached Wii remote, Nintendo has again captured the attention of gamers young and old across the world. Say what you want about their bubbly, kid graphics, and whimsical and light game plots, this system is just flat out fun to play. I had my doubts when I looked down and the cute looked box, loaded the first game I decided to play (Wii Tennis), strapped on the controller and got ready to play. My first impression was that this was some kind of kid’s toy, not something a “serious” gamer would ever be interested in. That changed the moment the game started. Never before have I had so much fun playing something so simple. Four people on a Sony 60 inch plasma, each with their Wii remote in hand, swinging wildly and laughing hysterically as they tried to smash tennis balls through the opposition was one of the most memorable and enjoyable gaming moments of my life. The little Wii remote had changed everything as far as gaming was concerned, and my friends and I could not get enough. “When is Star Wars coming out?” was the question of the day, all of us thinking what it would be like to actually be Darth Vader swinging the Wii remote and having those movements translated into our lightsabres, soon young padawan, soon. 

Other players dreamed of more sports titles: hockey, football, baseball, golf. Now with the Wii remote we could finally find out what it would be like if you had the talent of Tony Gwynn or Walter Payton, would you be able to be the player that he is? Looking to the future one can only imagine even more responsive live controls, but in the end the release of the Wii remote will probably be looked at as the most revolution thing to happen in the video game industry since the internet. A revolution is coming, and the Microsofts and Sonys of the world better find a way to incorporate something like the Wii remote or they will be left only to wonder what could have been.
