With all of the 3 7th generation video gaming consoles being over 2 years old, it is time to once again pit them all together and get the comparison of how each system fares, get their differences, their strengths, and weaknesses. All of these 3 platforms had their moment in the limelight and had their ups and downs.
Wii
Nintendo’s very own Wii has made a major impact in the gaming industry with its pioneering wireless motion controls that direct most of the games. It has long grown to be an instant family favorite and has become the platform of choice for gamers young and old and even to those who usually don’t play video games due to its wide selection of games that target everyone.
What’s a great feature about Wii is that it has backwards compatibility and the ability to play some old previously released games from previous consoles via download. Its support for 4 controllers and online adaptability also make it the one for family fun. The Wii also comes out very cheap at $249.
The main drawback of the Wii is the limitation of the graphics. This has slowly begun to surface more when the projected games started to be released, but didn’t land on the Wii console due to their inability to handle the graphics that the PS3 and XBOX 360 can deal with.
Playstation 3
The PS3 is the real powerhouse with all the latest technology and graphics upgrades that gaming itself can provide. It leads in being more of a home entertainment system than being a typical gaming system due to its Blu-ray support and computing versatility. The PS3 also has a large share of critically acclaimed games in the later months successfully attracting the more hardcore gamers. Multiplayer support is also enormous, thanks to their recently launched Playstation Home and its WiFi support.
All of these features come with a hefty price tag starting at $399 making it the key drawback of the whole system. The expense of programming games for the PS3 is costly as well, which is why plenty of the third party game developers veer away and focus on the other platforms.
Xbox 360
This early bird of the 7th generation platforms sports has some amazing high def graphics, which is, pretty much equivalent to the PS3. It has an wide-spread library of games that target the same gamers as the PS3 and is famous for offering the best rated games on the market today. Their Xbox Live service makes it better for playing online and their Xbox Arcade is good for gamers that are into retro games.
Although the Xbox 360 beats the PS3 by a slight edge in price, the hard disk space provided is lower and it doesn’t have the Blu-ray support that the PS3 currently reigns on. Playing high definition movies requires another HD-DVD drive unit unlike the PS3’s built in Blu-ray support.
These 3 dominant systems all have their respective places in the gaming universe. We have the Wii for the majority of avid gamers of all ages, the PS3 for some more hardcore gamers, and the Xbox 360 for PC gaming enthusiasts. While they are heavily contending to be the greatest console of choice, all the platforms are successful in what they perform best.
